Peter Backhaus at the Rothko Museum: Tensions and Transitions

We are proud to announce Peter Backhaus’s participation in the international group exhibition Tensions and Transitions: Navigating the Boundaries of Being at the prestigious Rothko Museum in Daugavpils, Latvia.

Running from December 5, 2025, to February 8, 2026, this exhibition marks a significant milestone in Backhaus’s international career. Exhibiting in the birthplace of Mark Rothko—a site dedicated to the very core of abstract expressionism—creates a profound resonance with Backhaus’s own “archetypal expressionism.”

About the Exhibition
Tensions and Transitions explores the existential boundaries of humanity in an era defined by both fragmentation and a longing for unity. Backhaus contributes works that inhabit the tension between total chaos and absolute stillness—a level beyond the personal ego and everyday reality.
His painting is often described as a musical and poetic survival strategy, where layers of color act as sediment in a deep psychological landscape. In dialogue with the museum’s atmosphere, Backhaus invites the viewer into “the open room”—a space for contemplation where intellectual analysis meets primal instinct.

An Artist in Constant Motion
Following a successful year with exhibitions at Schlossmuseum Greiz in Germany and international art fairs in Venice, Backhaus solidifies his position as a leading voice in contemporary abstract painting. His ability to merge personal history with universal human experiences allows his work to speak a language that transcends geographical and cultural borders.

“My painting does not recount the everyday; it speaks of the layers within the archetypal landscape that exist deep within every human being.”
