Peter Backhaus, the German-born pioneer of archetypal expressionism, delves further into the depths of the human psyche with his atmospheric 2024 collection. Born in 1947, Backhaus began his artistic journey after moving to Sweden in 1968, where he studied philosophy, psychology and art at the College of Design and Crafts in Gothenburg. His art serves not only as a means of expression, but also as a medium for exploring creativity and maintaining mental well-being.

The 2024 collection presents a series of works that reflect Backhaus’ profound philosophical and psychological explorations. Each painting acts as a portal into the deep layers of the human mind, creating a balance between chaos and stillness – a thematic hallmark in Backhaus’ oeuvre.
Entrance and Where it’s At conclude the collection, hinting at themes of beginnings and localised presence respectively. These smaller, more intimate works could symbolise psychological gateways or spatial metaphors for personal journeys, inviting the viewer to consider entering new states of mind.

‘Into the Mystics’ and ‘Breakthrough’ are the largest canvases that expand both physically and metaphorically. ‘Into the Mystics’ invites the viewer into a contemplative state, while “Breakthrough” depicts moments of profound personal or collective realisation. These works delve into complex psychological realms, exploring transcendence and significant moments of change.

Porta Hiking 2 and Way Home suggest movement and discovery, either as literal journeys or as metaphorical passages through life’s challenges. These images reflect the viewer’s experience of navigating and discovering unpredictable terrain and capture the essence of life’s journey.

Playing Woman and Energy and Rubber Trousers explore themes of activity and interaction. ‘Playing Woman’ reflects on femininity and play, centred around liberating actions or gender roles, while ‘Energy and Rubber Trousers’ explores the interplay between human endeavour and natural forces, suggesting a more industrial or energetic interpretation.
Backhaus’ collection balances abstract explorations with concrete emotional experiences, inviting the viewer to find personal resonance in universal themes. His use of bold colours, dynamic shapes and energetic brushstrokes reflect the pulse of the urban environment that inspires him.

Backhaus’ paintings blend intellect and instinct with an interplay of chaos and stillness. His art encourages the viewer to explore the contrast between earthly reality and existential freedom and to develop a deeper understanding of human existence.

Recognised in Sweden, Germany and internationally, Backhaus’ influence has grown through exhibitions in China and at the Florence Biennale. He has been represented by Pashmin Art Consortia since 2019. His inclusion in the ATIM’s Top 60 Masters and the award of the International Leonardo da Vinci Prize in 2023 underline his influence on contemporary art.
Peter Backhaus’ 2024 Collection is a testament to the power of creativity to foster healing and growth, ensuring his lasting influence in the art world.
