Peter Backhaus, a German-born pioneer of archetypal expressionism, dives deep into the human psyche with his atmospheric 2024 collection. Born in 1947, he began his artistic journey after moving to Sweden in 1968, where he studied philosophy, psychology, and art at the College of Design and Crafts in Gothenburg. His art serves as both expression and a means to explore creativity and mental well-being.
The collection
The 2024 collection features works that reflect Backhaus’ philosophical and psychological explorations. Each painting acts as a portal into the human mind, balancing chaos and stillness—a hallmark of his work.
The collection concludes with “Entrance” and “Where it’s At ,” which suggest themes of beginnings and local presence. These smaller pieces symbolize psychological gateways or spatial metaphors for personal journeys, inviting viewers to enter new states of mind.
‘Into the Mystics’ and ‘Breakthrough’ are the largest canvases, both physically and metaphorically. “Into the Mystics” invites contemplation, while “Breakthrough” depicts moments of personal or collective realization. These works explore complex psychological realms, focusing on transcendence and significant change.
Porta Hiking 2 and Way Home suggest movement and discovery, representing literal journeys or metaphorical passages through life’s challenges. These images capture the essence of navigating unpredictable terrain.
Playing Woman and Energy and Rubber Hose explore themes of activity and interaction. “Playing Woman” reflects on femininity and play, while “Energy and Rubber Trousers” examines the interplay between human effort and natural forces, suggesting an industrial perspective.
Backhaus’ collection balances abstract exploration with concrete emotions, inviting viewers to find personal resonance in universal themes. His bold colors, dynamic shapes, and energetic brushstrokes reflect the urban environment that inspires him.
Intellect and instinct
His paintings blend intellect and instinct, contrasting earthly reality with existential freedom. They encourage a deeper understanding of human existence.
Infuence in the Art World
Recognized in Sweden, Germany, and internationally, Backhaus’ influence has grown through exhibitions in China and at the Florence Biennale. Since 2019, he has been represented by Pashmin Art Consortia. His inclusion in ATIM’s Top 60 Masters and winning the International Leonardo da Vinci Prize in 2023 highlight his impact on contemporary art.
Peter Backhaus’ 2024 Collection showcases the power of creativity to foster healing and growth, ensuring his lasting influence in the art world.
